Street shopping is a vibrant culture in Mumbai. Whenever
you’re bored of the monotony of malls and branded clothes, street shopping
comes as a waft of fresh air. Everything is available at low prices and if you
shop smart, they will last. Although the places are generally crowded, the
bright colours and constant cheer makes it all friendly. Here are a few tips to
make your street shopping pleasant:
1. SCAN THE WHOLE MARKET
Before actually purchasing anything, you should
personally check out as many stalls as possible. You may find some hidden gems
at unexpected places, cute stoles at lower prices and tops that rare and
unique. So check around, ask for prices and observe well.
Yes, if you like something, do not show it. Play it cool!
Ask about the price of a few more articles; say you do not need it. Let the
salesmen convince you. This will ensure a lower price.
3. BARGAIN
Street shopping cannot occur without bargaining.
Unfortunately, bargaining does not come naturally. It is an art that has to be
learned. Go with family or friends who know how to bargain, learn a few tips
and try them when they are around. Some universal truths about bargaining are-
- Always reduce the price to almost half of what they quote
- Try convincing
- Say you are not carrying the amount quoted
- Walk away. Slowly. Almost always they will call you back!
People complain that the garments bought are often torn,
accessories are broken. But c’mon! They give you pretty things at low prices,
isn’t it obvious that you should check the article minutely before purchasing
it? Check for tears, open stitches, stains, faded color, loose buttons, etc.
Take your time; the salesmen will not get offended.

5. LOCAL LANGUAGE
The market hubs for street shopping are filled with
foreigners and tourists. The salesmen generally try to sell them articles at a
higher price using the “yeh Mumbai hai” and “fashion capital” lines. So talk in
Hindi, Marathi, and Gujarati so they do not bother to use any tourist tricks on
you. Make sure they know you are a local.
Crowded spots are the workplace of pick-pocketers and
thieves. Do not keep valuables in pockets, keep your wallets in your bags and
hold your purses close to you. The best way to shop is to carry your back-pack
on your front (yes, it will feel weird initially but you will not be the only
one doing it). Stay alert!
